In a historic demonstration, women joined together in Atlantic City, New Jersey to stage a protest of the 1968 Miss America Beauty Pageant and its narrow perception of feminine beauty. In defiance of shallow ideals, they threw items like bras, girdles, curlers, false eyelashes and high heels into barrels dubbed Freedom Trash Cans, declaring instead, “Let’s judge ourselves as people.” Symbolic in the casting off of society’s superficial constraints, one of these cans was momentarily lit on fire, and with it, sparked an enduring flame in the hearts of countless women to follow.
